On Friday I went to my baby brother’s kindergarten graduation! It made me remember when I did the exact same thing 😉

Then I went to my basketball team party which had some amazing food.

On Saturday I woke up early to meet my very first running group! I was so happy to discover that there’s a running group in my area. They were doing 8 miles but I only did 4 because of what was the next day 😉 They were all so nice, and I will definitely go every Saturday possible.

I quickly packed then left to meet my dad and stepmom to leave for Green Bay! We were going because my little brother turned 7 on Sunday. On the way down we stopped at Cousins Subs (my first time there) and I was very pleased.

We got there and headed to the National Railroad Museum. It was really neat, I learned a lot! Someday I want to go on a train ride. That would be so fun!

Then we went to Chuck E. Cheese. It was kind of weird. I used to have such a fun time there.. but I was kind of bored.

And then to dinner. I was starving! We went to Applebee’s. I ordered Chicken Broccoli Alfredo minus chicken extra broccoli.

It was delicious. And hot, I had to wait at least 5 minutes to eat it. Really hot.

Back to the hotel and some relaxing before bed! I was drained. I slept really well and was wide awake the next morning when I woke up for the 10k!

This was my first 10k ever (automatic PR 😉 ) so I was super excited! I had my toast with pb and banana then dad and I left for the race. It was freezing (48 degrees) and I didn’t bring anything but shorts so I would have to survive.

I ended up with a 45:25. I was very pleased with that time! I won my age group and was 12th overall.

This race was organized so well. I’d definitely do it again. Actually, I’d’ like to do the triathlon that was going on at the same time. I couldn’t this year because I haven’t trained for one and wasn’t prepared at all. That was the major event. The 5k/10k was a side thing.

After the race they had a beautiful array of food. I have never been to a race that had pancakes and waffles. Now that is awesome. You bet I had about 3 plates. And they had massages- score!!

And then we all headed to the zoo. The NEW Zoo, to be exact. I feel like all zoo’s are the same, haha. It was neat, but I was pretty slow getting around. I liked sitting down.

And then we headed home. I napped the whole two hours. I literally dreamed about ice cream so when we got home I had to get some.

On a sad note, my next year cross country coach got in a car accident this weekend and broke his sternum. He’s going to be okay, but I can’t imagine how this will affect his running. Please pray for him. ❤

This shirt is very significant. I bought it last year. But I refused to wear it because I looked fat. (I wasn’t fat, but the shirt was not very flattering). When I tried it on…  it looked good. It just showed how much I’ve changed from last year.

I bought a bike!

I’ve been using my cheap old bike for so long and I needed a new one so bad. I’ve looked before but I am the worst decision maker ever and couldn’t decide to save my life. Too much money? Ugly? Uncomfortable?  But I just said whatever and bought it! That was a really big step. I let change happen. And it has a super cute design on the spine!

I have a busy weekend ahead. Birthday party tonight, big Geocaching event tomorrow, 11 miles (longest I’ve ever done) on Sunday! If I make it you’ll hear a recap 🙂

Always doing something

For not having plans this weekend, I still stayed pretty busy. That’s good though, otherwise I get quite crabby! Some marvelous  things did happen though, so let’s share!

Marvelous: On Friday I went to a friend’s birthday party. Healthy people, avert eyes. I ate so.much.pizza. I lost count around 6… I do think my body needed it though. Sometimes it needs a break from health and could use some grease to get movin’! I really enjoyed it and that’s okay once in awhile!

Marvelous: Went for our usual Saturday run with cousin Laura. Always a nice easy pace to get ready for Sunday long runs, and some good talks.

Marvelous: I hit double digits!!! It is so crazy to think about just a few months ago when the only exercise I got was going to the fridge. I ran 10 miles. Technically 10.8 with warmup + cooldown! I just can’t believe I’m here.

Marvelous: The Cellcom Half Marathon is in less than 4 weeks! Wow. That is going to come so quick! I’m so pumped.

Marvelous: Dinner on Saturday. Such an easy meal but it was so delicious. Ciabatta with turkey, swiss, spinach, and tomatoes with roasted asparagus. Those of you on Instagram know what I’m talking about!

Marvelous: Brunch on Sunday. I needed some recovery foods after the 10 miler and this was perfect. Baked Oatmeal Casserole  except this time we added a mashed banana to the oats. Shut the front door it was amazing. Plus a green smoothie.

Marvelous: Family dinners. Grandma doesn’t have them too often anymore but I love when she does. I think this was the first time I actually ate what she made, no fuss. Big steps! Chicken and biscuits. It was good! Plus her oatmeal bars. Grandma’s recipes are always the best.

Marvelous: I am planning a Run for Boston. I had the idea last week, and I’m making it happen. All the proceeds will go to the One Fund Charity. It’s a lot of work! But I think it’s going to go well. It’s on May 11 and I’m really excited. I probably won’t be on the blog world too much- I’m crazy busy!

I definitely feel like I gained a little weight this weekend. I’ll get back on track this week.

The rest of this weekend isn’t too packed. Birthday party tonight, car wash (weather permitting!) on Saturday, 10 miles on Sunday- the most I’ve ever run! Oh my gosh… the half marathon is a month fromtoday!!

Will Spring ever come?

Is this even possible? Tell me how we got 6 inches of snow on April 12. Crazy! I guess I got one good thing out of it though- Snow Day!

I shoveled so we could leave the house. Then we headed to town and did a little grocery shopping and went out for lunch.

We went to Stone’s (again) and this time I got a Chicken Cranberry Walnut Wrap (right). My mom got the Veggie Delight. I wish I would’ve got something warm though, the cold wrap did not hit the spot.  Couldn’t leave without a cookie!

I decided to get some use of the snow and went cross country skiing, one last time! Let me tell you, it was not very fun. But it was so pretty!

One last thing- dinner last night! We made Iowa Girl Eats’s Chicken Fried Rice. I love that girl so much! It was pretty wonderful. My first time ever having Chicken Fried Rice!

A Marvelous Ending

Am I really….. done?! No more basketball??? Well, for two weeks until open gym starts 😉

I know, we still have high school ball. But this was the last travel tournament and last time this exact team will ever play together. Next year we’ll be split up on Varsity, JV, and Freshmen. And how cool that it was in our home gym, the first time we’ve ever hosted a tournament!

The night before the tournament (Saturday) we went to a benefit for a little girl with leukemia 😦 and so I could load up on my carbs. Spaghetti FTW!

I love eating so much. The coleslaw was amazing! The desserts honestly were disgusting.

We had games at 10, 2, and 6. I love eating a good breakfast to keep me going!

I also had a leftover piece of the Oatmeal Bake. Yum! And a banana after the first game.

We didn’t disappoint the home crowd. We went 3-0 to seal the championship!

Sadly, the last game I wanted to puke and cry because I ate way too many sweets. It’s not like I even ate that much, my body is just so not used to it. The concession had a bunch of baked goods to get rid of and they were way too good a deal for me to pass up. 2 for a quarter, I mean come on!

They were these little mini loaves and so cute! The “energy bars” had oatmeal, peanut butter, coconut, sunflower seeds and chocolate chips. These weren’t the most unhealthy things I could’ve chose. I didn’t pick cupcakes or cookies!

I went for a 6 mile run after to feel better, and since it was my long running day for training. I had to stop at Mcdonald’s and pee, hahaha. I was feeling better after. I took a shower and went to bed! I was exhausted!

It’s a Yooper Thing

What? Yooper?

Yooper is someone who lives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It’s the best place in the world, but I’ll save all that for another post. This is about my dinner tonight – a pasty!

What? Pasty? Not pace-ty. Not pass-ty. Pass-tee! The most well known Yooper food. A typical pasty includes meat and potatoes, but since it’s Friday and I’m Catholic, we got veggie pasties!

So delicious and filling. Potatoes, carrots, rutabaga, celery, onions, cream of mushroom, cheddar cheese, and salt & pepper. YUM.

My cousin Laura called and wanted to run so sure I said. It was as bad as yesterday’s run. So. Windy. She is not very fast though, I was practically walking. I’m planning on a long run tomorrow!

After I thawed out I had some ice cream! It’s been awhile. I’ve missed it. It was a nice treat!

A Fabulous Friday

Well. We made it through another week! I’m pretty excited for this weekend – basketball tournament! And it’s at home, so no traveling 😀

I actually had a good day today. I started it off with Overnight Oats! It was my first time ever trying them. I’m still acquiring a taste for oatmeal, but I’m definitely making them again!

In the peanut butter jar:

1/2 cup whole grain old fashioned oats

1/2 cup almond milk

1/2 cup Greek yogurt

sprinkle of flax seeds

It was a little plain, so I added some peanut butter because peanut butter makes everything better. Next time I want to try Pumpkin Overnight Oats! (with a few twists)

                                  

Had a shoot-around practice for the tourney tomorrow. More like a jump around! I had the great idea about when we used to jump rope at recess and wanted to try it again. So we got out the TWO ropes (double dutch!) and it was so fun! And I swear it was so much easier than in fourth grade – we all succeeded! Had to incorporate a little basketball into it too… 🙂 Let me tell you, it is a leg workout!

I’ve been carbo loading for the past couple days so I’ll have a lot of energy for the tournament. Tonight was no exception!

I bring you… Banana Pancakes!

These babies were thick and yummy! I know they’re not the healthiest pancake, but that’s okay! And SUPER easy. We’re trying to use up all our packaged foods, so this was the start of it.

2 cups buttermilk pancake/waffle mix

1 1/4 cup water

1 large mashed banana

Mix all the ingredients and pour on a griddle! Also, make sure you don’t mix too well – the pancakes won’t be as thick!

I added chopped walnuts to the batter also. You could add blueberries, chocolate chips, almonds, … I should stop.

I even put syrup on (gasp!) These suckers were pretty dang delish. Definitely more in the near future! I froze the leftovers and am sure they’ll make a good breakfast too!

                   

My mom isn’t the biggest pancake fan, so she made Bruschetta. I just can’t get into it which is the weirdest thing since I love bread and tomatoes. Anyway, here’s her recipe.

  • French baguette loaf
  • tomatoes
  • basil
  • garlic powder

Cut bread into slices

Brush with olive oil

Bake slices in oven at 350 for 6-8 minutes

Top with tomatoes mixed with basil & garlic powder

I had to have some dessert! There is currently TWO pies in our fridge. I settled on a small(ish) piece of the pumpkin and a sliver of the peanut butter. Topped with a little Greek yogurt.

In the pie:

  • 1 package cream cheese
  • 8 oz cool whip
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup confectioner’s sugar

Mix everything but the cool whip. Add the cool whip when others are mixed. Set in a pie crust and chill. Done!

I feel like I haven’t been eating super healthy lately. I don’t think I’m gaining weight though. I really think the key is moderation! And I love it!

It Never Stops

Remember when I said I was almost done with everything and would have time to myself?

Friday: Bonding time with my dad. I don’t go to his house very much. We went to a basketball game (weird! ;)) then he was hungry and wanted Culver’s. I was bad and had this!

Honestly it wasn’t even that good.

I was pretty worried on Friday night because I was sleeping at my dad’s and wouldn’t get to do my normal routine. Not my usual breakfast, no morning yoga…. I survived!

Saturday:

My stepmom usually makes this for breakfast on the weekends. I let myself have a few pieces…

Then my dad and I went snowshoeing. It was my first time so I wasn’t sure what to expect!

It was pretty fun. We went a little over an hour – around 2 miles. It was hot! We were gonna stop and build a fire but decided not to.

Later when I got to my regular home, I went xc skiing and tried to look for a cache. Ever heard of Geocaching? So cool! My phone died so I couldn’t finish finding it. I’ll try again soon!

Then I had to run 3 easy miles for half marathon training! I ran with my cousin Laura who is a good easy pace. My mom wanted pizza for dinner so we got a BLT and a chef salad.

THEN I went cyberbowling! I really didn’t want to, but it’s been awhile since I did anything with my friends so I sucked it up and went. I had an okay time. I like bowling!

Sunday:

Had eggs and toast for breakfast. Haven’t had that for a long time!

Basketball practice. Tournament next weekend!

First softball practice of the year! I think it will be a pretty good season.

Run. It was probably 3-4 miles, I was supposed to do 4 today for training.

I got out my guitar and played a little bit. I don’t know why I haven’t been playing lately.

Book Review: House Rules and My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

How is it MARCH already?!?!?! What the heck!

It’s Friday! I love getting out of school early. So much. My mom and I are gonna go xc skiing later, then I’m going to a basketball game with my dad.

My first Fitness magazine came in the mail today! 🙂

I actually had a really busy week which I wasn’t expecting. I had some depression in the beginning of the week but it got better as the week went on.

                                

March is National Reading Month! So what’s better than a book review to start it off?

Jodi Picoult, House Rules

This book is about a single mom with a son who has Asperger’s. Jacob is interested in forensic science and is always showing up a crime scenes. When there is a murder, signs point to Jacob… could he be a killer?

House Rules

I honestly loved this book. I was hooked from the start. Having autism myself, I could really relate when it was Jacob’s point of view. Picoult did a tremendous job researching that. It did of course, have to have some love story in it… ew. I think Picoult likes adding that drama.

It was definitely a page turner and I really wanted to find out what happened. This story really helps people see what   autism/Asperger’s are like. I give this book 4.5 stars!

Jodi Picoult, My Sister’s Keeper

My Sister’s Keeper is about a young girl, Anna, who was conceived to be a donor for her leukemic sister, Kate. When Kate needs a kidney, Anna draws the line and wants medical emancipation from her parents. It’s a story about family, hope, and self-discovery.

I probably shouldn’t have been reading this, because it fueled my depression even more. Aside from that, it was a great book. You could see every side and why they wanted what they wanted. I’ve noticed the three Jodi Picoult books I’ve read have all dealt with court. I really learned a lot about the law. They also all had a love story… not my favorite. I really enjoyed reading this and want to watch the movie now!

This book really shows self-discovery and maturing. There’s also a strong emphasis on what is right and what is wrong. How far will you go to save someone you love, even if it hurts someone else?

I give this book 4 stars. The ending will really throw you for a loop!
